A pocket-sized sunscreen stick for the spots that cop it first: nose, ears, cheeks, back of the neck:

Available in clear and tinted. The clear zinc stick disappears on application. The tinted version gives a natural tone while doing the same job.

What's the difference between the clear and tinted?

The clear stick uses zinc oxide as its only UV filter. The tinted one combines zinc oxide with other UV filters in a hybrid formula. Both are SPF 50+ and 4 hours water resistant. In terms of finish, the clear one blends in and disappears. The tinted one leaves a natural skin tone, which some people prefer if they want a bit of coverage as well.

Do I rub it in or leave it on top?

With the clear stick, swipe it on and blend with your fingertips so it sits evenly. The tinted one you can either blend in or leave a visible layer. It's protecting either way.

Can I use this as my only sunscreen?

You could for your face, but it's really designed for the spots that cop the most sun, like your nose, ears, and cheeks. If you need full body coverage, a lotion is easier for the first application and the stick is great for top-ups throughout the day.

Is it water resistant?

Yes, up to 4 hours. You'll still want to reapply after swimming, sweating, or towelling off.

Will the zinc stick melt in my bag?

It's a solid wax-based stick, so it handles heat much better than a tube of cream would.

Can I apply this over makeup?

Yes. Swipe it on gently over your makeup and then pat it in with your fingertips to even it out. It's a lot easier than trying to reapply a cream sunscreen over your face halfway through the day.

How is a zinc stick different from a regular sunscreen?

Mostly the format. A cream or lotion is better for that first full-body application in the morning. A zinc stick is for quick, mess-free top-ups on the areas that burn first. Most people end up using both.

Does the zinc stick come in colours?

Maxiblock makes the zinc stick in two finishes: clear and tinted. There's no green, pink or blue in the range. If you're after the bright zinc you see on cricketers and surf lifesavers, that's a different product.

Using a zinc stick on your face, nose and ears

Your nose, ears, cheekbones and the back of your neck cop the most sun and get missed the most often. A stick lets you go over them without sunscreen running into your eyes or through your hair. Two passes over each spot, then blend it with a fingertip.

Does it stay on in the water?

It holds on well. The wax base grips to skin rather than washing straight off, which is why it tends to stay put through laps and surf better than a cream would.

Zinc stick or sunscreen cream?

Most people end up using both.

  • A cream is faster for the first full-body application in the morning.
  • A stick is for the spots you go back to through the day: nose, ears, cheeks, back of the neck.

One thing worth knowing: a stick lays down a thinner film per swipe than a lotion does per squeeze. So don't rush it. A few overlapping passes on each spot, blended with a fingertip, and you're set.
